Why are hate crimes considered “message crimes”? How does this aspect of a hate crime
impact the victim, the group t which the victim belongs, or the community as a whole?

A hate crime is considered a message crime due to its aspect of committing a crime to
send a hate speech message to another recipient. Offenders of hate crime tend to use their will
and power to commit different crimes aimed at pushing for a persuasive message of fear and
prejudice towards another person, group, or activity. Besides, we can say that hate crimes are
perceived to be message crimes due to the aspect of delivering biasness in the form of a message
delivered through their speech word content on a target victim (Hardy & Chakraborti, 2017).

The message of hate obtained from the hate crime by an offender tends to impact the
victims differently based on how they take and understands the message from the speech. The
message may then impact a victim or a group of people for whom it was targeted by depicting its
impact on their psychological well-being.

Based on the biasness of the message from the hate
speech tends to receive or understand that the hate crime offender was sent to them a message
that they are unwelcome and unsafe in a specific context where they are in (Hardy &
Chakraborti, 2017).

As a result, the information (Message) in the hate speech ends up
victimizing the entire group or person being targeted, hence lowering the victims’ sense of safety
and security feelings.

In some instances, the hate crime offense may impact a third party for which it was never
targeted. For instance, a person may witness a hate speech message being directed towards his or
her colleagues or groups. Through the aspect of witnessing such an act, the person can turn into a
victim by developing psychological disorder based on witnessing such hate speech messages
being thrown towards his or her colleagues. In many cases, people may imagine being in the

same shoes as the victim and ends up developing feelings of hatred, fear, or psychological
distress as a result of such an act. The message of hate crimes is normally seen in the context of
social and political change. However, they are also present in the economic context of life. The
message of hate speech leading to hate crime may be as a result of the offender feeling motivated
by hate, fear, ignorance, anger many other factors.

For me, it is hard trying to pinpoint elder abuse is serious than child abuse because they are
BOTH serious issues. Children and elderly people are very fragile and need every care in this
world, so trying to pick which one ‘outruns’ the other does not make a difference because they
both are forms of abuse that cause serious harm to people and may result in death. Elder abuse is
a significant problem in the United States and often goes unrecognized and unreported.

This type of abuse of older people can include physical, emotional, or sexual harm, financial exploitation,
and neglect of their welfare by those responsible for their care (Team, 2020). As older people
become more physically weak and begin to rely on others to meet their basic needs, they tend to
become vulnerable to deliberate abuse and neglect in their homes and assisted living facilities,
such as nursing homes. Elder abuse and neglect are seen as a widespread critical health concern
in our society that can be done by family members, strangers, friends, caregivers, and health care
providers. I believe that all types of abuse done to the elderly are serious in my eyes.

However, if I must choose one, I want to go with physical abuse. Like I said before, the elderly is very
fragile, and pushing, shoving, punching, throwing, smacking, pulling, kicking, and any physical
activity done by someone stronger than them will hurt and weaken them. Most of the time, due
to old age, they are not able to defend themselves and cannot do anything about the abuse they
are receiving. Caregivers get angry and fed up and start to handle the elderly more aggressively
by pushing and shoving them. These actions can be a one-time thing or become a normal
occurrence. This type of abuse I think is very serious because it can cause serious harm to these
older people or even kill them. Since older people’s bodies are weaker, even a single instance of
abuse can lead to long-term health problems or even death (Team, 2020).

Protecting the rights of older adults and preventing their exploitation, abuse and neglect are
critical. The legal problems of older adults are often more critical than those faced by other
segments of the population. Such issues could include income security, housing, utilities,
protective services, abuse, neglect and age discrimination. It is important for older adults to
understand their rights and seek counseling when needed. The Older Americans Act supports
legal service programs that provide and enhance important protections for older adults (Elder
Rights, n.d.). There are many agencies and programs that provide help and service to the elderly
in need. However, it is important for the elderly to know and be informed about their rights and
the programs they have available to them.

My mom was once a home attendant and I used to hear a lot of stories when it came to
the elder. She would tell me that her coworkers would not feed or change the patient’s diaper
because they would not want to deal with it, leaving them hours in their own soil until a shift
change. The patients would tell my mom how the coworker that just left did not do anything but
sit on their phone and ignore them and yell at them. It always broke my heart hearing about this
because I never understood why people who have no patience get jobs in healthcare to deal with
the elderly. The elderly are the ones who need all the love and care they can receive. They are
very fragile and have been through a lot and sometimes just want companionship and help.

I believe that before anybody gets a job with the elderly, they need to be monitored for at least the
first two months of the job. Perhaps caregivers need to have body cameras or cameras in every
room of the facility they work in when dealing with the elderly. This way managers, bosses,
families, and the state would be able to see any signs of elder abuse if necessary since it would
be caught on camera. Especially like the video we watched this week. It broke my heart watching
a nonverbal old person get thrown around like nothing; those nurses talk about him and laugh at
him while screaming and pushing him around.

Unfortunately, this is the case for many nonverbal elders. Non-verbal elders are not able to defend themselves or tell anyone that they were abused because they could not speak. Having cameras in place just like this facility would help reduce and neutralize elder abuse not only for non-verbal people but for all elders in care facilities.

More needs to be done to get a job in taking care of the elderly to the extent that deeper
background checks, tests, and certifications, training needs to be more thorough, and they need to
be able to handle older people’s mood swings without lashing out.
